The Royal Mint is the official manufacturer of British coins in the United Kingdom. It is currently based in Llantrisant, Wales, where it moved in 1968.
Operating under the legal name The Royal Mint Limited, it is a limited company wholly owned by HM Treasury and has an exclusive contract to supply national coins. As well as minting circulation coins for the UK and international markets, The Royal Mint is a leading supplier of precious metal products.
The Royal Mint has historically been part of a series of mints that have centralised and produced coins for the Kingdom of England, the whole of Great Britain, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth countries.
The Royal Mint operated for several hundred years in the Tower of London before moving to the building now known as the Royal Mint Court, where it remained until the 1960s. When the UK followed the rest of the world in decimating its currency, the Mint moved from London to a new 38-acre (15 ha) facility in Llantrisant, Glamorgan, Wales, where it remains today.
Among its most famous coins, the Britannia coin is one of the most famous.
