The Year of the Snake is one of the twelve signs of the Chinese lunar calendar. It repeats every 12 years, with the last years of the snake being 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 and in 2025. In Chinese culture, the snake is often associated with wisdom, intuition and transformation.

People born in the Year of the Snake are considered to have several distinctive traits. They are often described as intelligent, wise and intuitive. Snakes are attributed with a natural ability to deeply analyze situations and make decisions based on careful consideration. They are also known for their charm and elegance, and are often characterized by a mysterious and appealing demeanor.

On the front of the coin you will find the Niue State Seal. The State Seal of Niue, the official emblem of the national government, displays a badge with native flora representing the island in the centre. This is surrounded by a ring of shells and crowned with a royal crown, which links the island to the Commonwealth.

The reverse of the coin features a snake in the centre. The image shows the serpent writhing in the distance in the background, with its head raised and tongue out. The Chinese character for snake is depicted in the center circle, while seven golden snakes are shown in coiled positions along the bottom of the field.
