The Fairy Morgana, traditionally Morgan le Fay in English, also known by the names Morgaine, Morgain, Morgan, among others, is a powerful and mostly evil witch from the stories of King Arthur. Her name(fata Morgana, i.e. "fairy Morgana") carries an illusory optical phenomenon in the atmosphere.
As her name suggests (fay means fairy, supernatural being), Morgan was originally depicted as a witch or otherworldly being rather than a human woman. Her role as a witch remained even after she began to be portrayed as a real woman and the sister of King Arthur. The character of Morgan was inspired by Welsh mythology, in which the goddess Modron, called "the daughter of Avallach", appears. Avallach was a Welsh god, but his name can also be interpreted as "the place where apples grow". This interpretation is related to the name of the island of Avalon, the "Island of the Apples", which has been associated with Morgan since she first appeared in literature.
